Why not think about a VW tdi? They are great little cars, excellent fuel mileage and then you can stick with diesel! If you are set on either a bmw or saab I would go bmw, the saabs are great cars and last a long time but are very hard to find parts for these days.

I can't find any tdi's in my budget otherwise I would go that route. As for the rangers, I like em a lot, but if my wife is going to drive it with the little one she'd prefer a car.

I bought my daughter a 98 528i BMW just a month ago or so. It's a sweet ride.

Thats too bad, I always see them for around 5000 in the lower mainland bc, late 90s and early 2000s.
