2001 Chevy 3500HD CC dually 4X4 Build thread.

My brother picked up this truck as is with only 70k miles on it for $6k. I'll post more details about it later as well as updates as the project comes along. Right now the plan is do go with the 05-07 replacement parts and aftermarket hood and a 6-9" inch lift to go with it!

There are a lot of mods that came with this truck and the previous owner was meticulous with it. It's unfortunate that the people pulled out in front of them. All I know is that they went to the hospital. I won't tell you what the original owner said about that but fortunately for my brother, he get's a go with this truck.

Here is a photo that we took just after getting it into his shop. It took the bobcat to get it shoved in there.

Wow that was a pretty serious wreck. Any frame damage? How far back did the radiator stack push back?

Yea, how much damage did it do? More pics of the bottom and engine bay area would be cool.

Yeah, each frame rail was pushed over to the right by at least 12-18" at the bumper.

The radiator had a pretty good size indention from the fan. Just enough damage to demolish the timing cover and there is some sort of a sensor, pcv or something else that was to the bottom left of the Alternator.

Coming up!

Parts list,

Fendors, hood, grille, radiator core support, battery brackets, all the lights, frame, fan clutch, Inner cooler(was bent but we bent it back and it pressured tested, thought it wouldnt bolt up after being straightened... Turns out to be a crappy aftermarket radiator core support. Might have to order another.), timing cover, sensor, and some misc. hoses need new hardware. Ty-rods were bent. It's getting a 6-9" lift and hopefully getting it reassembled this week.

I'm sure there are some things that I missed on the list of parts to replace but here's a little more info about the goodies that the truck's previous owner did.

-The fuel injectors were replaced at 60k(The owner added a hefty fuel filtration system)
-Jake brake system
-Gooseneck hitch in the bed B&W
- Efi Live tune w/dsp2 switch
- Upgraded chrome wheels
- Transfer Case was replaced at 70k(Previous owner left it in 4wheel on a trip) is the story. Replaced before the wreck.
-Brake controller(not a big deal, lol)
-Volant CIA

And there are a few other things that I am sure that I am missing.

Here's an updated photo, ok I lied... We are a little further along than this but I am trying to trickle my posts, a little...

Once, all the suspenion, motor mounts and engine supported the front of the frame rails actually slide into a section under the cab. If you grind the welds on the outside of the frame and inside, the front rails will slide our from the remaining chassis.

While you have that front clip off replace the water pump with a welded gear style. The harmonic balancer has to come off to get the water pump off. It's a pain to replace it with the front clip on. Lisle sells a kit for holding the flywheel and it comes with the socket for the harmonic balancer. When the balancer comes off inspect the pin on the shaft to ensure it wont sheer later.

Also remove the crankshaft position sensor (Bottom passenger side of the motor) and check the reluctor gear for any play. Now is the time to inspect it because you can see it easily. Probably no issue with it but it's worth the 5 minutes to inspect it because of the front end collision.

And finally, the plastic part by the alternator that broke was the PCV.

It's nice to be part of a forum where people know about these trucks!

If my brother and I weren't the bull in the china shop type, it would have been nice to have that tool for the harmonic balancer removal. We just took the starter off and was able to stop the flywheel from turning.

The one thing we didn't rush into reinstalling is the front seal. The diesel tech at the Chevy dealership said that he just hammers the new ones on. They make a special tool that slides into the shaft that allows the seal to be slid on in perfect alignment without screwing it up! We got the tool for this because you wouldn't know otherwise until you started it up!

New water pump and the sensor was jacked!

Here is the new frame under the truck with new motor mounts too!

Getting there, I had all the pictures of the lift and crap but I got a new phone. Unfortunately, I did not take the time nor did I care to back up any photos. I care now that I want the pictures now but oh well.

Here's what I got.

We are kinda stuck at this point. I want to offer a couple tips of advice at this point.

1. Don't do drugs.
2. Don't buy after market parts, you'll get burned every time.

So far, The radiator core support aftermarket part didn't line up correctly. We set it off to the side and bought OE. Price difference, less than 200 vs. 460 for the oe.

Radiator from Keystone, leaked anti-freeze before start up-just from total fill. Also, on start up the transmission line was pissing out transmission fluid.

Waiting on a OE radiator at the moment.

Well, here's the color that it will get painted to...

In light of that thought and waiting on a radiator. We started pulling panels and cutting the glass out.
