Project 6.BLOW
tired of having a basically stock truck and decided to redo the top end of the 6.blow. already did egr delete, upgraded oil cooler, new thermostat, updated turbo oil drain, coolant filter and blue spring fuel pressure upgrade and tunes from matt R at gearhead performance. truck runs great and i love it but its time for more.
found a sick deal on a barely used powermax, then i decided to order a race fuel regulated return setup with fuel bowl delete and some 175cc/75% warren injectors. those will be going on when the cab comes off soon at the same time studs and new oem hg's and a 4" turbo back exhaust go on. also in prep i bought a spare motor and took the heads off and sent them off to be machined and ready to install when the cab comes up. planning to also do a live tune from gearhead also after the install. aaanny ways heres some pics and the list. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...S/59a559e3.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...S/58a7266f.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...S/9f6d288e.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...S/a8320824.jpg |

Looks awesome man. whats the stock turbo on he 6.0?
|
stock is a garrett vgt turbo
http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSCN4043.jpg powermax is a little bigger similar to the gt38r upgrade for the 7.3 (38r is also a powermax). the 6.0 powermax is still vgt but has larger inducer |
Now that's the stuff we need to see. Props Jake.
|
so the stock 6.0 turbo cant be swapped with the stock 7.3? Ive searched the diesel forum im on but cant find any info on it.
|
theres been one ive seen where someone put a stock 6.0 vgt on an obs 7.3 but there no real reason to swap the vgt on to the 7.3 except the whistle. the 6.0 powermax is a direct drop in just like the 38r for the 7.3 no need to change up pipes etc
|
No added boost? I hear the stock 7.3 can only handle up to 30 psi and up to 25 efficiently, im running 24. The whistle would be nice... ha ha.
You know anything about swapping the impeller with the banks impeller? You seem to know a lot about te turbos, your kind of my go to guy ha ha |
haha. i have a buddy with a early 99 7.3 hes currently finishing up studs injectors, hpop, and an s366 turbo. im not sure on the boost numbers but the best bang for the buck with basically every thing else stock is the 38r. your biggest enemy isnt lifting the heads but more the PMR's you have.
and heres the aeromotive regulator http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...S/5e3c2363.jpg |
Good write up jake! Keep it comin
|
Awesome info Jake.
Haven't broke down a 6.0 or 7.3 yet but it's something I wouldn't be afraid to take on. |
it really wasnt all that involved but was 100% easier without the cab anywhere nearby haha. it would have taken me longer if i cared where all the bolts went and had to bag them up. doing it this way i just zipped the out and threw them in a cup or plastic tub
|
That sounds like you'll be busy for a while. How much $ have you got into the rebuild?
|
Hes been a busy guy ha ha.

That's a cheap build! Nice job. I am sure others know the history, but was this a blown up engine before the build?
|
my truck is doing just fine right not but i wanted more power. its got almost 178K on it now. the parts motor i bought had blown oil and egr cooler and blew the head gaskets. i only wanted the heads but the guy said take the long block for 400 bucks. the injectors themselves are going to bring me 500-800
|
Good deal! damn man, I knew you got a sweet deal on that but I didnt know it was that good.
|
Hella deal!!!
|
yea it was a deal i couldnt pass up. that 400 was loaded also haha. i called my guy with the shop that night and picked it up the next day after he said i could keep it there. so far im only into it about 325 after selling 2 random pieces.

Very simillar to what I am planning here shortly. I am going with Powermax, Studs, hopefully a GoGo Stage 1 ported Intake but that will be last considering the $$$. Also doing a Regulated Return from Dozers, and a DF165 Airdog. Only Difference is the injectors, I am only going 155/50's I think for now, cause I still need to be able to tow max tow rating ++++. Like a couple time a month I am at GCVW of 32-34,000lbs moving a friends skytrax on a 35' dual tandem, Its typically never more than 15 to 20 miles and never over 50mph.
My daily trailer is about 8500lbs, and twice a week I tow around 15,000lbs. I average 30,000 miles a year towing those two trailers, so i figure I should just stick with 155/30's or maybe 50%'s? |
All that sounds expensive and time consuming....just drop in a 5.9 cummins and forget about it:favorites37:
|
But then he'd have to tell people he has a cummins...
I'm wanting an upgraded turbo and some stage 2 injectors, but I need to rob a bank or reply to that email from that guy in Syria who has a family fortune for me before I can get them. |

And then you still might crack a block, stretch a head bolt or blow a gasket when you put power to it....just ask my buddies with thier 5.9's! ....just sayin....people always wanna say the 5.9 is the cure all when in reality, it's just another mechanical engine. The 6.0 is one of the most misunderstood engines out there. It got a really bad rap in the begining that it just couldn't overcome, when honestly, if you wanted to make it an extremely reliable engine it isn't all that expensive nor all that difficult. EGR Delete $200 ARP's $450 Gaskets $250 Coolant Flush to ELC and Coolant Filter - $300ish That alone would give you a very reliable engine for many many miles. Add about $1,800 for labor if you don't wanna mess with it yourself and you have a great motor for a little over $3grand. Then you have the left over $7 grand you saved from not doing a cummins conversion to add power in whatever from you want. |
I've been hearing that the 6.0 is a little more reliable than the consumer reports say. Just don't over boost without bulletproofing. And delete that EGR.

The 6.0 can not be treated like a 7.3, it needs regular maintnance. Fuel filters every 15K max, good oil and regular oil changes. It also doesn't like lots of short trips, it needs to be DRIVEN. Short trips that don't let it get up to temp then being shut off again is a death sentence. It also doesn't like to sit, moisture in the air then rusts the VGT, and you can have all kinds of turbo problems. Some of the most reliable 6.0's are ones that are worked everyday in and out. Most of the real low mileage units are problems childs..not always, but it is definitly a pattern. Part of the problem was people went from a 7.3 to the 6.0 in 03 and 04, and treated like they did their 7.3, they then paid the price for it. I have 134K on my 06, I work it to the bone every day, I maintain it very well, but I am not easy on the truck at all! I have had 1 EGR cooler fail (warranty), IPR Valve (warranty) and recently a wiring harness problem (not under warranty) It is starting to have an injector issue, but other than that its been a great truck and I couldn't be happier with it. Now that warranty is expired, I have an EGR delete, ARP's, new Gaskets, and new oil cooler waiting in the garage. In the next couple weeks I will start tearing it down to really bulletproof it. Just waiting to get money to get my Warren Injectors here then start!! The thing is, you just need to be informed about the engine. Know what might happen, prepare for it and fix it if it does happen. And no engine sounds better then a straight piped 6.0!!!! IMO that is. |

With that said I would deffinatly have a 6.0 if it was headed, studded, and deleted. At the time I was looking to get back into a diesel from my 1/2 Ton F150 super crew 4x4 I almost traded for a sweet 06 F250 crew cab lifted. I wanted it but we just couldn't get together on it. It had all the right engine work. Paper work to prove it. Then I got the offer on my current truck. Met with him and drove it and fell in love. It's hard to explain untill you own a modded 5.9 CTD. It has a lighter feel (it is lighter and has 40% less moving parts) and is freaking fast. It sounds amazing with the 5" MBRP exhaust. It will now be hard for me to go back. I'm not saying I won't but it would have to be something amazing for me to switch. I do love a F250 tho. They are my first love :favorites37: |
Westin...just so ya know I wasnt replying that in a mad way, I am in no way shape or form upset. I just try to help others know that the 6.0 isnt exactly the peice of junk most think it is.
I meant nothing other than sarcasim when I said that the 5.9 isnt alot of money and time consuming. I know you know your stuff and are a longtime ford guy, just trying to help educate others that may be reading. And thanks for leading me over here...loving the site so far!!! |
the dodges do drive much lighter I know, my buddies have several. From 1st gen on up to a 2011 6.7 cummins. I have driven them all, and for some reason still prefer my truck.
And your right the 5.9 is one of the best, but they do have problems too. Nothing like the 6.0 but they do breakdown still, and at a cost of 8-10 grand to convert, i would just bulletproof the 6.0 and save some coin myself......but I am a happy 6.0 owner so that makes a big difference! To me, if somebody wants a cummins, they should do what you did and just by a dodge, I think its far less likley to have problems that way. |
