Getting a gas saver.

So the wife and I decided we ARE getting a third car for saving gas given my SD is getting between 15 and 20 mpgs (depending on the tune im using) and her escape is getting about 16, and id like to keep the miles down on my truck.

We were looking at 2wd rangers and mazda b series pickups, but I think we are going to go the route of 4 door car. We are mainly looking at mid to late 90s BMWs and SAABs, I like the bimmers, she likes the looks of the saabs.

I just thought a thread to follow and get some opinions on some cars would be pretty cool, I know west is a bimmer guy.

heres what we are fixin to look at in the next couple of days.

If anyone else is scootin around in something other than your truck show it off!!

Agjake11 03-13-2012 10:34 AM

im rocking a 2012 Focus Hatchback for a day or two. its a nice little car haha (Dealer Loaner)

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 11:33 AM

I wish we could pick up something newer ha ha, sounds like a fun car. We are restricted by our tax return and what we can throw at it within our budget so the "under 5" is where it's at! There are some pretty decent cars for that price though.

Bigbluediesel08 03-13-2012 01:19 PM

How about one of those smart cars? Lol.. I am also going to start looking for a nice gas saver.. A prius...

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 01:32 PM

NOOOOOO......... Don't go to the darkside! :jester: problems we are havin is while getting something too expensive will save gas, we won't break even for 2 to 3 years.

Bigbluediesel08 03-13-2012 01:38 PM

Just playing buddy. Lol. Those dam prius are too expensive.. Maybe a nice used focus or malibu??

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 02:48 PM

Phew ha ha... They are spendy. I like the focus, I'm just not big on cars really. The only ones I really seem to like are the European imports.

Big'un 03-13-2012 03:49 PM

I hate cars lol , big guys and cars dont match :jester:

Bigbluediesel08 03-13-2012 05:22 PM

I hear you, im a big guy too.. In order for me to fit comfortable, I'm gona have to remove the front seat and use the rear one. Lol

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 05:35 PM

^^ ba ha!, Im pretty tall, thats probably why I dont like them. the seats dont go back far enough and my knees hit the steering wheel.

lol! Or the dashboard. I remember when i used to have a 2000 camaro ss. Man, i used to hate going in that car.

Big'un 03-13-2012 09:27 PM

yea im 6'5 and 300 lbs , so cars are a no :jester:

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 09:45 PM

I can just see you hopping out of an escort :jester: Im 6'3" 200 lbs and I have a hard time fitting in our escape, I dont know how im going to handle a car. I guess if its fun to drive and gets good mileage itll outweigh the discomfort.

Big'un 03-13-2012 09:49 PM

my wife wants a new edge , im kinda leary of the size lol

01 D_Max 03-13-2012 09:57 PM

But those EDGE's are nice looking rides... Expensive tho!
A friend of mine is 6-0, 340lbs and He fit well in a EDGE.

Big'un 03-13-2012 09:58 PM

yea she wants a maroon one , theres once here at the dealer for $36k new.... i want a maroon edge sport

01 D_Max 03-13-2012 10:23 PM

They are pretty fast too! She has good taste, but 36k isnt cheap by any means.

Big'un 03-13-2012 10:26 PM

nah shes a RN so she will get it :jester: .... and ima slap a big maroon A on the backglass ROLL TIDE!

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 10:28 PM

My wife wants one of them too.

Big'un 03-13-2012 10:29 PM

well tell u wat , yall get one and if yall have good luck with it ill go buy one :jester:

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 10:31 PM

ba ha! Im not buyin no 35k suv right now..

01 D_Max 03-13-2012 10:35 PM

I'd be puttin 1/2 that into my truck, and tell her to buy a used car with the other 1/2...

Bdons-SD 03-13-2012 10:37 PM

^^ ha ha, IF i had 35k layin around not doing anything ha ha

Bdons-SD 03-14-2012 02:31 PM

Going to go look at this tomorrow:

Gunna be careful about the rebuilt title, find out why. If I really like it I'll pay to get a vin lookup and a carfax.

Jarma36 03-14-2012 06:24 PM

Why not think about a VW tdi? They are great little cars, excellent fuel mileage and then you can stick with diesel! If you are set on either a bmw or saab I would go bmw, the saabs are great cars and last a long time but are very hard to find parts for these days.

westtnfx4 03-14-2012 06:55 PM

You can't go wrong with them rangers. They are great little trucks.

Bdons-SD 03-14-2012 07:00 PM

I can't find any tdi's in my budget otherwise I would go that route. As for the rangers, I like em a lot, but if my wife is going to drive it with the little one she'd prefer a car.

I bought my daughter a 98 528i BMW just a month ago or so. It's a sweet ride.

Thats too bad, I always see them for around 5000 in the lower mainland bc, late 90s and early 2000s.

Bdons-SD 03-14-2012 07:26 PM

how many miles are on that? and hows it treating you?

westtnfx4 03-14-2012 08:21 PM

It's her first car and it has around 130,000. It treating us great. I've had many other BMW cars and you can't go wrong. They just drive and feel different. I love'em

Bdons-SD 03-20-2012 12:34 AM

Thats an awesome first car... I have kind of wandered from the BMW's they just stopped popping up on CL. My wife told me to start looking at VWs again, came across this Jetta gli vr6 with the 6sd manual. Went out and drove it today, and man, thats a hell of a ride. I love the bimmers, but my wife likes the Jettas, and I dig em too so I think we might try to snatch this one up tomorrow. Sucks I cant find a bimmer, but I think this will fit as a commuter/3rd family car a little better than a bimmer coupe ha ha.
heres the cl page

Its a little dirty but itll clean up nice. Just got out of the tranny shop on friday (he showed receipts) drove really nice, no ticks, squeaks, or thumps. couple small blemishes on the body but nothing noticable unless you know its there. should buff up nice.

01 D_Max 03-20-2012 10:47 PM

Insurance on a BMW isnt cheap. I was going to buy one, and it wasnt worth the insurance at all for me.

Stroked68 03-20-2012 11:16 PM

Saab is basically a european gm. I assume they still help build them since the bail out. Just get a focus or escort. Great lil cars, great mpg and look good. Well atleast the focus looks good. I almost bought an svt zx3. My ex and i bought a 96 escort se 4 door sedan and that thing got 38mpg easy and low 40's on the highway. 5speed is the only way to go in a lil car. Escort zx2's are great lil cars as well. Only 2 doors though. You could get a zx5 focus (4 door hatch back for a lil over 3k).

Bdons-SD 03-20-2012 11:36 PM

We ended up picking up the Jetta, its sittin in the garage right now, Im going to vacuum it out and do a rough cleaning. She liked it, I like it, its sporty while still getting about 25-30 mps. itll help keep the miles down on my rig and her escape while still maintaining a nice sporty car. I just got back from the hour long drive to pick it up and I am satisfied. Im actually kind of excited to go to the dentist tomorrow just because I get to drive it. :jester: Ill get some pics when I clean her up tomorrow.

Stroked68 03-21-2012 09:02 PM

Congrats! I'd love to have a TDI. I'd love to have a micro bus for some reason. The camper van kind would be sweet!

westtnfx4 03-21-2012 09:04 PM

VW's last a long time man congrats!

Bdons-SD 03-21-2012 09:05 PM

Thanks guys!

01 D_Max 03-21-2012 09:07 PM

VW TDI's are great on fuel! I would get one in a heartbeat.

Bdons-SD 03-21-2012 09:20 PM

I wish I could have found TDI in our budget
